ski like a girl: Clyde Getty's Vancouver Bid

One day until the opening ceremony.  Does Argentina's, Freestyle aerialist, Clyde Getty know if he is going?

When I last heard from Clyde he was still very hopeful.  His bags are packed and ready.  He still isn't listed on the official Olympic athlete list but I did find him on the Sports Illustrated athlete list.  Maybe they know something that we don't?

The Men's Aerial competition takes place on February 22nd!

Clyde, I hope you are on your way to Vancouver!  ski like a girl wants to see those triples you've been talking about.

ski like a girl & lululemon's Be Ready for Anything Challenge Day #5

lululemon be ready for anything challenge

Day #5

Jumpasana. Show us your best jumping photo!

In an effort to combine everything I love yoga, skiing, and the Olympics. I have chosen a very special picture for this challenge. I know we can't all jump like an Olympic aerialists but this jump is way better than anything I can do.   So I won't even bother to show you a pic of my two foot airs!  Hey, I am off the ground...

Let's call this  the Daffyasana. Clyde Getty, Argentina, Freestyle Aerialist, is keeping it Old School.  There are only 7 days left until the Opening Ceremony and Clyde doesn't know if he will be competing in Vancouver.  For more on his story go to his blog and leave him a message.   Tell him ski like a girl sent you.

If you want to join in on the be ready for anything daily challenge check back here or head straight to the source at lululemon.

I will post my own jumpasana pictures once I get back on the snow.   If you want to send your jumpasana pictures to me for a future post send them to: skilikeagirl@ymail.com especially if they are the on snow variety.    Asana is one of the eight limbs of yoga.  The postures and poses of yoga.  You can add asana to anything.  Snowasana!  Skiasana!
xoxo,
ski girl

p.s.  My day 4 challenge results, hold plank for 3 minutes, were a success.  The last 30 seconds were tough!  I didn't do the one foot up version.  I know I'm a wimp. (I'm not mentioning the shoulder.)  How did it go for you?

ski like a girl says, "Let Clyde Compete!"

Only 10 days until the Opening Ceremony in Vancouver and Argentina's, Freestyle Aerialist, Clyde Getty doesn't know if he will be competing.

I think Clyde explains it best.  The following is from Clyde's One Winter, Five Dreams blog:

"Here's the deal, however...

I still believe that I will compete in Vancouver, but I still do not know. Talk about "crazy Clyde"...geeeeeze.  The lists have gone out, I am still on a waiting list. It's not over yet, apparently, and no overweight person is singing.

My understanding is as such. ..there ARE available spots. Only 24 of 25 of the womens spots are filled, and there are also additional spots that can be allocated for men and/or women. Certainly the rules in the FIS documentation are not clear.  Every official person I have been able to ask, has not been able to give me a definite answer on how decisions are made and who makes them.

I did my part in following the guidelines, and going to all the possible competitions to best improve my chances for the games.  There are FIS guidelines, and Olympic (IOC) guidelines. Olympic guidelines follow the creed (I would assume)...

As the Olympic Creed states, "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

Is seems that the "creed" is not really being followed. Because if it were, I would be in, and so would a few other athletes from other countries.

I also ask this...Why do other freestyle events (moguls and skicross) get 30 competitors, yet aerials only gets 25?

Sooooo,
As of this moment, I am NOT in.  However,
That CAN change.

I know that all of you want me to be competing in Vancouver. So, in order to help the cause, I would encourage you to ask what's up with that? The FIS is located in Switzerland, and is at
I do not think that I need to give any specific emails (yet), but I am sure that it is easy to find the Freestyle directors, or other personnel contact info.  If you need some direction or have any other comments, you may contact me at GoToVancouver@GettySystems.com

You can't always get what you want...but if you try sometime...you get what you need...
Famous words, yes. True, yes.

Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.  Good words, but really now...not making it to the games is certainly not the worst.

It's about the journey, not the goal.

Hmmmm. That's a tough one.  I certainly am enjoying the journey, but c'mon now, that goal would feel awefully good.

But remember, my goal is to land two triples, in competition, at the Olympic games in Vancouver.

Very specific, yes. I am always risking not making that goal.  If I do everything right, I will accomplish it.  But, I must do everything right. That is my Olympic challenge.

It is what it is, and what happens, happens, but I will do everything in my power to compete in Vancouver."

ski like a girl: Flying high with Clyde Getty

     Daffy's Rule!
Wow!  I'm so excited!  Really excited!  Really, really excited!
I'm sure most of you realize I'm making much more out of this back and forth between me and Clyde than is really warranted.  But let me live in my delusion. It's my happy place. Read down to the last post from Clyde and you will see why I'm so giddy.

From the comments on Clyde Getty's One Winter, Five Dreams blog.

Daffy's do Rule! I have an "old school" skiing book "Freestyle Skiing, the fundamentals" written in 1976. I'm working through the book trying to learn the ski ballet stuff. I used to dance so some of it works but sliding down a hill changes everything. I love it! I need a coach, learning movement from a book is challenging at times. Of course I love the helmet cam video. It's great to see what you see! Thanks again for the awesome posts and the replys!

I don't usually like to age myself but this next post is key to my story, so I'll let it out.
As another one of the over 40 crowd, I second, Ron's comment. You are an inspiration! I want to go to one of the 3 day summer camps at Utah Olympic Park this summer and learn to jump. I suppose I should be signing my 10 year old up for it but I want to do it! You're my hero. I love all the great posts. It's exciting follow your journey. Best wishes to you.

    Utah Olympic Park

    Leilani-
What can I say. Geeeeeze. Thank you! I am looking forward to seeing you jump at the Utah Olympic Park. I will be happy to help you (and your 10 year old) get off those ramps. You rock AND Rule! :-{)

The ramps! (There is a much smaller one that's not in this picture.)

This is the part I'm so excited about!  Do you think he means it?  Will Clyde Getty actually help me and my little ski princess learn to jump?  That's so awesome!

Watch this video from the Flying Ace show at the Utah Olympic Park on July 4th.  Clyde thinks he was there.  I think so to. I do remember the announcer introducing a skier from Argentina. Help me figure out which one of  the aerialists is Clyde.  Clyde if you read this, which ramp were you on?

ski like a girl: sharing the love with the One Winter, Five Dreams Athletes

My little ski princess has been following my bloggin' activities with as much interest as you'd expect from a 10 year old. Uh, not a lot.

Most of it has been, "Mom, are you still writing cuz I need my laptop to check on my FarmVille". "And the ever popular "Are you done yet?" And my favorite "You said 5 minutes and it's been like 20".

(Yes, she has a laptop and I don't! And yes, I have to "borrow" it to write blog posts. That's the kind of quality parenting going on around here.)

So I was very surprised and a little touched when she came up with the idea of asking her friends at school to write messages to the Panasonic One Winter, Five Dreams athletes. She can be a sweet kid! (When she wants to be.)

ski like a girl & 10 reasons to become a fan of Katharine Eustace

A fellow blogger, The Olympic Dream, has been writing these great posts about the Panasonic One Winter, Five Dreams featured athletes.

I'm expecting he'll have one out soon for Tugba Karademir, the Figure skater from Turkey who is also heading to the games. But there is one athlete from the Panasonic's One Winter, Five Dreams project that won't be competing in the Olympics this year. And her story is far from over.
I have to admit before I got involved in this project I didn't really know what Skeleton racing was but now I have a whole new respect for the athletes and the sport. And late last night when I found myself glued to the TV watching the recent Men's Skeleton World Cup from Austria, I knew I was hooked.

Ten reasons you should become a Katharine Eustace fan on facebook

    10. She is an amazing athlete and should have more fans!

    9. She trains hard.

    8. She needs some ideas for dinner.

    7. She's gracious and humble.

    6. She flies down an icy track at crazy speeds reaching 70 miles an hour

    5. Face first...

    4. With no brakes!

    3. She makes sparks!

    2. Her story isn't over yet!

And the number ONE reason you should become Katharine Eustace's fan on facebook is

    1. She is already thinking about Sochi in 2014! She'll have 4 more years of experience. And with Kazuhiro Koshi and Clyde Getty as examples she won't be getting older, she'll be getting better!

ski like a girl & flying from Clyde Getty's perspective

    Flying from Clyde's perspective.

Clyde Getty, wearing a water proof helmet camera, performs a Lay-Lay (double back flip layed out) in the 2010 Lake Placid World Cup Freestyle Men's Aerials competition, 1/22/10. Clyde finished in 35th overall. Click here for full results.

Here is Clyde's Coach John's view of his Lay-Lay-Lay (triple layout back flip) in the 2010 Deer Valley World Cup, 1/15/10. Clyde came in 35th overall. Click here for full results.

Clyde said the, "triples were easy, fun, and HUGE."

Here's a little back and forth between me and Clyde. You know how much I love this stuff!

From Clyde's blog post: Triple today...competion tomorrow.

Sweet, triples!!!!! I'm so excited for you. Stay focused and keep your mind clear. You can do it. You have all the skills and experience necessary for success. Best of luck in your competition tomorrow.

Posted by leilani aka ski girl at Jan 18, 2010 1:02 AM

    Leilani-
Yes triple. No problem. Deer Valley was great despite my cold. As I said to Jeffrey, I would like to think that it did not affect me. Maybe it did, but I don't think so. I competed with triple Layout...and that was the first time I did it in competition ever. It may be the first time it was EVER done in competition by anyone. That would be sweeeeet. I have video of it, and I will put it on here as soon as I can. Thanks again for your great support. Abrazos :-{)

Posted by Author Profile Page Clyde Getty replied to leilani aka ski girl at Jan 22, 2010 3:02 AM

And a little more from Clyde's post "How was Calgery?"

Love the detail you go into between the double and the triple. The math is beyond me but what you do is very impressive. Were you in Park City in July? I saw the Flying Ace performance over the 4th so I have some idea of what your summer training entails. I also ran up the hill to the Utah Olympic Park as part of my training. I've been posting info on you and the other 4 One Winter, Five Dreams athletes on my blog www.ski-like-a-girl.blogspot.com Keep up the great work! Looking forward to reading about Deer Valley. Best Wishes.

Posted by leilani at Jan 12, 2010 1:13 AM

    Leilani-
Yes, I was in the Flying Ace shows, probably even the one on July 4th. You must definitely be in great shape if you can run up the Olympic Park hill. I would dread that. Maybe next you'll be jumping and going off "Mongo"!

But, yet another adventure comes in Deer Valley! Thank you for your enthusiastic support. :-{)

Hmmm, I have video of that Flying Aces show from the 4th. I need to go back and check it out.

ski like a girl wants to be like Clyde (Clyde Getty)

Tomorrow will be my first day back on the snow since my unfortunate collision with a snowboarder. Wait, that sounds like I hit him and if you've been following my blog you know that he took me down from behind. Somehow as we got tangled together and continued to slide down the mountain my shoulder was partially dislocated. And I've been whining about it ever since. Now it's time to move on. Seriously, it's time.
Well it's been a month and tomorrow I'm skiing and I hate to admit this, I'm a little scared. Okay, that is completely an understatement. I've been having nightmares, a little P.T.S.D. That would be post-traumatic stress disorder for those of you who haven't committed the DSM-IV to memory.
I think I may be overreacting a bit. I just need to suck it up and ski. I just need to be like Clyde.
Watch this YouTube video of Clyde at the Turino Winter Olympics in 2006
Watch Clyde fly through the air
    Watch Clyde spin
    and spin
    an spin
    Watch Clyde hit the ground
    hard
    on his face
    and kind of bounce
    on his face

    Watch Clyde jump up
    and wave
    and wave some more

    Watch the crowd cheer

So if you can't tell Clyde is my new hero.
Here is a little more gushing about Clyde and how awesome he is. Last weekend at The Nature Valley Freestyle World Cup in Deer Valley he managed to displace his 10th rib in competition.
From Clyde's One Winter, Five Dreams blog:
"Well, Deer Vally was yet another crazy experience. Yes, I did triples, and I did a triple on snow, in competition, that I had never done before. That's called a "lay-lay-lay" or triple layout. Some old timers may call it the "triple banana", but this was no banana, it was straight. Once again however (like 2006 Olympic games) , "I stuck it in training", but I didn't stick it when it counted...in the competition. Unlike the 2006 games however, I did not come in short. Instead I gave it a bit too much, so to speak. So, I landed, yes, but I slapped back pretty hard. Hard enough to displace my #10 rib."
But that didn't stop him. A few days later he is in Lake Placid at The Nature Valley Freestyle World Cup, flying through the air again.
So tomorrow I will ski. It has been a month and I will be like Clyde and ski. And if all goes well I may even hit the freestyle clinic because you know I really just want to be like Clyde.

I'll keep you updated Clyde and his Olympic dream. His goal is to do two triples and place in the finals. Clyde, ski like a girl is cheering for you!

ski like a girl and "One Winter, Five Dreams" Robel Teklemariam

Robel Teklemariam Ethopian Men's Cross Country Skier has Qualified for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics!  His search for snow paid off and he can now focus on making his Olympic dreams come true.

The lack of snow made racing difficult for Robel. This is from his blog at "One Winter, Five Dreams, "It has been my biggest frustration so far this winter. I just want to qualify but to do that I need to race. So it seems this has been a search for races as much as points to qualify for me. I lost out on five races because of snow conditions. Now time is running short."

Congratulations Robel, you found your snow and you did it!!!!

Robel is the second of the Panasonic's "One Winter, Five Dreams" athletes to qualify for the Vanouver 2010 Winter Olympics.  Ladie's Figure Skater, Tugba  Karademir, qualified in early in the season for Turkey's team and then had to deal with the disappointment that her parents couldn't get tickets to watch her compete. They now have tickets thanks to a generous donation by an anonymous corporation.

With less than a month away two of the athletes are qualified leaving three to go.

Clyde Getty, Argentina's Freestyle Skier is in Deer Valley this weekend. He says, "Deer Valley, Utah is most likely the World Cup Freestyle tour athletes favorite spot". Clyde qualified for the 2002 Winter Games there.  If I'm reading the schedule correctly he's competing tonight at 5:45 with the finals at 8:25.  If you are in the area head over to the Visa Freestyle International World Cup.  Best of luck Clyde!  You've got that triple!

Katharine Eustace came in 7th in her most recent Women's Skeleton race and has one more chance to earn points toward the second New Zealand sled.

And Japan's Kazuhiro Koshi, age 45,  is still competing against the young guys in Men's Skeleton.

Check back for more updates.  Please join ski like a girl in supporting the "One Winter, Five Dreams" athletes by reading their blogs and posting messages of encouragement.  Share in the passion and excitment of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

    xoxo,

p.s.  Shouldn't there be a decision about the Gold Blogger finalists soon?  I read on a press release that the finalist would be notified today!!!  Wish me luck.

ski like a girl profiles Clyde Getty

"One Winter, Five Dreams" Panasonic Vancouver 2010 Athletes Blog

"The five athletes we have chosen to introduce here have overcome a variety of adverse circumstances in seeking the opportunity to compete in the Olympic Games. They may not be “star” athletes, but like every Olympic contender they have a dramatic story to tell. About having meager finances and putting one’s entire resources intro training. About battling the barrier of an aging body before even beginning to face one’s rivals in sport. About going to the Olympic Winter Games from a country without snowfall. And like every athlete who aims for the Olympic Games, they each cherish a special dream in their hearts. It is the strength to believe in one’s dream that makes it possible to keep on trying and overcome all types of adversity. We want to put these athletes in the spotlight and share their dreams and passion for Olympic competition.

Please add your comments to their blogs. Your voice of encouragement will cheer them on to pursue their dreams of Olympic gold. It will help them stay energized, motivated and focused on winning. In this way, you can participate in the human drama of making dreams come true and the thrill of victory. The Olympic Games are a magnificent stage where athletes and their supporters from around the world can celebrate sports together regardless of national borders and cultural differences."

Here is the third of the five athletes.

    Clyde Getty

    Argentina

    Men's Freestyle Skiing

Clyde Getty (Argentina) Born in 1962 in the United States of America. Age 47

The following is from Clyde's facebook page Clyde Getty/One Winter Five Dream.
Clyde Getty was the oldest ski contender. His performance was not a difficult one but he missed his landing, hit his face hard on the snow and his skis came off from both legs. He finished last. Still, Clyde waved to the crowd that cheered for him, swung his helmet around and even blew a kiss.
Clyde was born in 1962 to Argentinian parents in the United States. After becoming a member of the US Freestyle Skiing Team in the 1990s, he changed his citizenship to Argentina and has since qualified in 2 Olympic Games. He usually spends his time living in Boulder, Colorado, with his loving wife, 3 dogs, 3 parakeets surrounded by nature. He has a great sense of humor, but also an aggressive obsession towards his sport, “The word retirement does not exist in my dictionary”, and a strong love for his country, “The Argentinian made in USA”
    .

Please join ski like a girl in supporting Clyde's Olympic dreams!

Check out Clyde's blog and share you words of support and encouragement as he continues to focus on his dream. And wish me luck in my dream of becoming the Gold Blogger so I can go to the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and continue cheering on all of the amazing athletes.

Here's the info on the Gold Blogger.

Panasonic also is conducting a global campaign to select a "Gold Blogger" from among the general web users who share Panasonic's passion and help promote the blog, through their blogging and/or other social media activities. Panasonic will provide a place for the Gold Blogger to exhibit his/her skills.
The selected Gold Blogger will be sent to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games to cheer for the athletes and blog about the athletes' activities and competitive performances. ski like a girl is "feeling herself think"

So the really cool thing about the 5 athletes featured in Panasonic's One Winter, Five Dreams is that in addition to being incredible athletes, focused on their dream. They are real people just like us. And when you comment on their blogs they actually write back! And sometimes within those responses you'll find some words of wisdom that can change your life or at the very least your skiing. And isn't that what life is all about- skiing better? Seriously, Clyde Getty just shared his thought process about his take-off with little ole' me!

Here's what I wrote to him after reading his blog post "Television coverage from China!!! (plus some music)" and watching video of his visit in China.

Sometimes it's all about the landing. Great job! I loved the closeness you have with the Chinese team. This is truly an international experience! Happy New Year and best wishes to you.

Posted by leilani aka ski girl at Jan 07, 2010 8:33 AM

And then he took time out of his incredibly busy travel and training schedule and wrote back.

Leilani, you are very right. Landing is 30% of the score! However, a good take-off is what I think about, because, with a good take-off, the execution of the jump is easier, and the landing is usually good. It is best for me to just think about the take-off, the my body will do what it needs in the air. The best is when everything happens well, and it feels like it is in slow-motion. That way you can actually "feel yourself think".

Happy 2010 to you as well, and thank you for your wonderfull wishes. :-{)

I hope that when my shoulder is healed and I'm hitting a jump I can find that place where I "feel myself think" like Clyde does.

Well like I promised earlier today in ski like a girl profiles Katharine Eustace, I'll have a full profile of Clyde tomorrow. So please check back. If you have some time go to One Winter, Five Dreams and share some love with the five athletes. You never know what you'll get back in the process.

ski like a girl wants to be The Gold Blogger!!!!!

Win a chance to be a Gold Blogger and share the excitement of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games !!

"Bloggers around the world who would like to see the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, please give us a hand! A Gold Blogger will be selected from users who have posted heart-warming messages on the blogs (of any of these 5 athletes), or who have supported these athletes through their blogging and/or other social media activities. The selected “Gold Blogger” will be sent to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games to represent the online supporters by blogging about the athletes’ activities and competitive performances. The Gold Blogger will also deliver the online messages from the participators of the site to the athletes (subject to the conditions at the location). Your voices of support will encourage the athletes in their pursuit of their dreams and lead them to victory. So let’s share their passion!"

Here is the link if you'd like to enter and send some love and support to 5 amazing athletes.

Panasonic Vancouver 2010 Athletes' Blog. / "One Winter, Five Dreams."

    Here are the five athletes

    Robel Teklemariam
    Ethiopia
    Men's Cross Country Skiing

    Kazuhiro Koshi
    Japan
    Men's Skeleton

    Katharine Eustace

    New Zealand
    Women's Skeleton

    Tugba Karademir
    Turkey
    Ladies Figure Skating

    Clyde Getty
    Argentina
    Men's Freestyle Skiing

Of course I'm entering the contest! It's a way for me to stop feeling sorry for myself and my inability to ski right now. (Refer to the post ski like a girl why am I smiling?). It gives me a chance to focus on someone else and give them much needed support and attention as they participate in something truly amazing the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. These five may not be the stars of the games but to me they are already winners. Best of luck to you all and I will continue to post and support each of you.
