ski like a girl: sharing the love with the One Winter, Five Dreams Athletes

My little ski princess has been following my bloggin' activities with as much interest as you'd expect from a 10 year old. Uh, not a lot.

Most of it has been, "Mom, are you still writing cuz I need my laptop to check on my FarmVille". "And the ever popular "Are you done yet?" And my favorite "You said 5 minutes and it's been like 20".

(Yes, she has a laptop and I don't! And yes, I have to "borrow" it to write blog posts. That's the kind of quality parenting going on around here.)

So I was very surprised and a little touched when she came up with the idea of asking her friends at school to write messages to the Panasonic One Winter, Five Dreams athletes. She can be a sweet kid! (When she wants to be.)

I'm expecting he'll have one out soon for Tugba Karademir, the Figure skater from Turkey who is also heading to the games. But there is one athlete from the Panasonic's One Winter, Five Dreams project that won't be competing in the Olympics this year. And her story is far from over.

I have to admit before I got involved in this project I didn't really know what Skeleton racing was but now I have a whole new respect for the athletes and the sport. And late last night when I found myself glued to the TV watching the recent Men's Skeleton World Cup from Austria, I knew I was hooked.

ski like a girl and yet another One Winter, Five Dreams Post

Don't say I didn't warn you about the OCD thing.  I've been a busy little ski girl.  Today I built a Squidoo lens for the One Winter, Five Dreams athletes. It puts their blogs, youtube videos, pictures, and other info all in one place.  Hopefully it will draw a little more attention to these incredibly hard working athletes as they count down the days to the big event.  Yes, only 22 days!  I've turned into quite the fan.

Clyde Getty has 181 fans, Robel Teklemariam has 214 fans, and Tugba Karademir has 11 on her English page and 860 on her personal page.  So far I'm the only fan on Kazuhiro Koshi's and Katharine Eustace's pages.  Let's change that!  And while you're at it why don't you become fans of all five athletes.  I am.

While we're talking about Facebook, ski like a girl has a Facebook fan page too and could use a little more love.  It takes 25 fans to be able to get a custom Facebook username (instead of that ridiculously long and convoluted one) and we have 8 fans right now.  Please fan us!  You'll get ski like a girl updates and we can chat on Facebook.  All kinds of good stuff.  If you have a page let me know.  I'm a really good fan.  Kind of stalkerish at times.  Did you see "The Fan" or  "Swimfan".  Well I'm not that bad.  Really! ski like a girl supports Katharine Eustace

With the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics less than 22 days away, the excitement is building and the qualifying continues.  Sadly, for one of the athletes featured on Panasonic's One Winter, Five Dreams Project her Olympic dream has drawn to a close. Although Katharine Eustace came close to her goal of New Zealand taking a second sled to the games, coming in 5th at the Inter Continental Cup in Calgary wasn't enough to win her Olympic bid.  Even though we won't be watching Katharine compete in 2010 her inspirational story is well worth following.  Read her blog on the One Winter, Five Dreams site.



Katharine is ranked 26th in the world. Not too shabby for a sport she has participated in for only two years!  I think we'll be seeing more of this 34 year old.  Possibly 2014?

ski like a girl and "One Winter, Five Dreams" Robel Teklemariam

Robel Teklemariam Ethopian Men's Cross Country Skier has Qualified for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics!  His search for snow paid off and he can now focus on making his Olympic dreams come true. 

The lack of snow made racing difficult for Robel. This is from his blog at "One Winter, Five Dreams, "It has been my biggest frustration so far this winter. I just want to qualify but to do that I need to race. So it seems this has been a search for races as much as points to qualify for me. I lost out on five races because of snow conditions. Now time is running short."

Congratulations Robel, you found your snow and you did it!!!!

Robel is the second of the Panasonic's "One Winter, Five Dreams" athletes to qualify for the Vanouver 2010 Winter Olympics.  Ladie's Figure Skater, Tugba  Karademir, qualified in early in the season for Turkey's team and then had to deal with the disappointment that her parents couldn't get tickets to watch her compete. They now have tickets thanks to a generous donation by an anonymous corporation.

With less than a month away two of the athletes are qualified leaving three to go.

Clyde Getty, Argentina's Freestyle Skier is in Deer Valley this weekend. He says, "Deer Valley, Utah is most likely the World Cup Freestyle tour athletes favorite spot". Clyde qualified for the 2002 Winter Games there.  If I'm reading the schedule correctly he's competing tonight at 5:45 with the finals at 8:25.  If you are in the area head over to the Visa Freestyle International World Cup.  Best of luck Clyde!  You've got that triple!

Katharine Eustace came in 7th in her most recent Women's Skeleton race and has one more chance to earn points toward the second New Zealand sled.

And Japan's Kazuhiro Koshi, age 45,  is still competing against the young guys in Men's Skeleton.

Katharine Eustace One Winter, Five Dreams

Maybe it's because I live in America. Or maybe it's my perception of sports figures being big ticket items, with endorsement deals, and big pay checks.  But somehow I've lost touch with the idea that not every Olympic competitor has the latest gear, the best coaches, is well funded, or has any kind of support at all .

She's an elite athlete going through intense training and competition and she is eating couscous and cup a soup for dinner! The debate with herself on whether it's acceptable to boil an egg with only her kettle is sadly sweet.  I just want to send her some protein. Can I do that?

What I love about Katharine as you watch her videos and read her blog posts is that none of that matters. She is determined and focused. She is positive and making the best out of her situation as she works toward her dream.

Katharine has this to say about her video,"As you can see from the video the life of an elite athlete isn't all about hotels and being looked after, it's all about working hard and making the most of all situations so you can perform at your best".

Twenty sleds qualify for the Olympics in the Women's Skeleton Race. Katharine is about 100 points behind where she need to be to qualify as New Zealand's second sled.  Her teammate Tionette Stoddard has qualified for the one New Zealand spot.  Katharine's goal is to qualify a second sled. Which means she must finish ahead of the other nations trying to send two sleds.  A win on the race circuit is 150 points and she has two races to go.

Katharine says,"I'll give it my best and will know by the end of this week whether I will be going to the Olympics or not."

Katharine Eustace, age 34, has only been participating in skeleton for 2 years and is now 1 of the top 3 skeleton athletes in New Zealand. Katharine started out as a sprinter in Track and Field. As Skeleton is not a popular sport in New Zealand, Katharine is having trouble finding sponsors to help her with overseas competitions and training. She will not know if 1 or 2 skeleton athletes will qualify for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics until the last minute but continues to work on her daily training. Of course I'm entering the contest! It's a way for me to stop feeling sorry for myself and my inability to ski right now. (Refer to the post ski like a girl why am I smiling?).
